Demand Studios is completely legit and awesome. I've been working for them for a little over a year and I make a steady paycheck that I receive twice a week. Although it is vastly different than a print publication, I find that those who can't adjust to this line of work are used to academic or newspaper level article writing -- which is quite labor intensive. The key to succeeding at demand is streamlining your research and familiarizing yourself w/ the guidelines -- which are 80 percent AP. I'm both a copy editor and writer so I see both sides of the coin. In many cases, both copy editors and writers are subpar when it comes to the complaints in the forums. However, if you stick to the guidelines and are a decent writer there is no way you won't succeed at this job. It really just takes a little time to get used to (took me about two weeks). DS is also making many changes to improve the writer and copyediting experience.
